Founded in 1976, Maastricht University (MU) now has 16,000 students, 6 schools, and nearly 4,000 staff. In 2013, MU ranked the 98th in Times Higher Education and Forbes Ranking of University Rankings. In the QS Top 50 Under 50, which ranks the top 50 universities under 50 years old around the world, Maastricht University reached 6th place. In a similar list published by Times Higher Education, Maastricht University was placed 6th. According to Admissions Guide of Netherland, among 16 undergraduate courses in Netherland assessed, MU were in the top 3 in 11 courses and took up the 1st place in 6 courses. In the Keuzegids Admissions Guide published in 2013, UM took up the first position in comprehensive ranking and 8 of UM’s master programs ranked the first, such as Knowledge Management, Media Culture, Fiscal Economics, International Business and Psychology.
Maastricht University enjoys the highest degree of internationalization among all universities in Netherland. In 2013, Maastricht University was the second Dutch university to be rewarded the ‘Distinctive Quality Feature for Internationalization’ by the Accreditation Organization of the Netherlands and Flanders (NVAO). About half of the bachelor's programs are fully offered in English, while the other half is taught wholly or partly in Dutch. Most of the master's and doctoral programs are in English. Foreign students coming from more than 100 countries take up 45% of the whole students, and foreign teachers take up 30% of the whole faculty.
The School of Business and Economics (SBE) was founded in 1984. As a business school, SBE is one of the few business schools in the world who are accredited by EQUIS, AACSB and the Association of MBAs. The school now has 4200 students, of which more than 60% come from abroad, and 500 staff, of which 40% are foreigners. Undergraduates of SBE are required to study abroad for one semester. Undergraduate and master programs of SBE were accredited as ‘Internationalization’ in 2010. SBE also offers mountains of internships and job opportunities in international companies for its students and the companies include DaimlerChrysler, Bosch, InterFinanz, Sinom.Kucher&Partners, Caogemini, AtosOrgin, Pricewaterhouse Coopers, Mercedes-Benz, BDO International, DSM and the like.
